Diamond Clarity
Clarity measures the presence or absence of internal characteristics (inclusions) and external characteristics (blemishes). These natural features form during the diamond’s growth and are unique to each stone, much like a fingerprint.
Clarity is graded by examining the diamond under 10x magnification. While some inclusions are visible to the naked eye, others are so small they can only be detected by an expert. In some cases, inclusions can be positioned or concealed within a design so they are virtually unnoticeable when worn.
The GIA Clarity Scale

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) divides clarity into six categories, with a total of 11 grades:
Flawless (FL)
No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification; exceptionally rare.
Internally Flawless (IF)
No inclusions visible under 10x magnification; only minor surface blemishes.
Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1, VVS2)
Inclusions so tiny they are very difficult to detect even for a skilled grader.
Very Slightly Included (VS1, VS2)
Minor inclusions visible under magnification, but still considered high clarity.
Slightly Included (SI1, SI2)
Noticeable inclusions under 10x magnification, often not visible to the naked eye.
Included (I1, I2, I3)
Obvious inclusions under magnification, and sometimes to the naked eye, which may affect transparency and brilliance.
Choosing the Right Clarity
The right clarity grade depends on personal preference, budget, and the diamond’s size and shape. For example, step cuts like Emerald or Asscher tend to reveal inclusions more easily, while brilliant cuts can help mask them.
Our diamond specialists can help you choose a clarity grade that offers the perfect balance of beauty and value, ensuring that inclusions, if present, do not detract from the diamond’s sparkle.
