Lab-Grown Diamonds

What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are physically, chemically, and optically identical as mined diamonds.

Physically identical
They have the
same crystal structure, hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), and density as natural diamonds. If you touch or wear them, you wouldn’t notice any difference.

Chemically identical
Both are made of
carbon atoms arranged in the exact same way. There's no difference in composition.

Optically identical
They look the same to the naked eye and even under magnification. They have the same
brilliance, sparkle, and clarity as mined diamonds.

In short, a lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. The only difference is how it’s made — one forms naturally over billions of years underground, the other is grown in a lab over a few weeks using advanced technology.

How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Created?

Lab-grown diamonds are produced through advanced technology that replicates the natural diamond formation process. There are two primary methods:

Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)

This method starts with a small diamond seed placed in a chamber filled with carbon-rich gases. These gases are heated until they turn into plasma, breaking down the carbon molecules. The free carbon atoms then slowly settle onto the seed, layering over time and growing into a full-sized diamond. Think of it like snowflakes accumulating to form a snowball—only in this case, it's pure carbon forming a crystal.

High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT)

This process mimics the extreme conditions deep within the Earth, where natural diamonds are formed. A small diamond seed is placed inside a press, where it is exposed to intense heat (over 1,500°C) and immense pressure (about 1.5 million pounds per square inch). Under these conditions, carbon atoms begin to arrange themselves around the seed, gradually forming a larger diamond. Imagine squeezing a lump of coal under immense force until it transforms into a sparkling crystal.

At DIA'LOG, we use a combination of both. Both methods result in diamonds that are visually and structurally identical to mined diamonds, ensuring exceptional quality and brilliance.

Why choose Lab Grown Diamonds?

A more ethical and conscious choice
Every lab-grown diamond is free from the ethical concerns associated with traditional mining. By choosing lab-grown, you ensure that your diamond purchase aligns with responsible and conflict-free sourcing.

Every bit a real diamond
Lab-grown diamonds are physically, chemically, and optically identical to mined diamonds. They have the same brilliance, structure, and timelessness—recognized as real diamonds by the same global gemological standards.

A new category of diamond, a new opportunity
Lab-grown diamonds offer something truly exciting: the chance to experience the beauty and meaning of diamonds in a way that feels modern, conscious, and accessible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are lab-grown diamonds “real”?

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds (also known as lab-cultivated or man-made diamonds) are real diamonds. They share the same chemical composition (pure carbon) and crystal structure as mined diamonds, which gives them identical hardness, brilliance, and sparkle. The difference is in how they form. Rather than growing over billions of years deep within the Earth, lab-grown diamonds are cultivated in controlled laboratory environments.

Are lab-grown diamonds “fake”?

No. Lab-grown diamonds are 100% real diamonds. They are not imitations or substitutes, they are genuine diamonds grown above ground rather than mined from the Earth.

Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical composition, crystal structure, and brilliance as natural diamonds. They are graded and certified by the same respected gemological institutes (GIA, IGI) that certify mined diamonds.

The misconception that lab-grown diamonds are “fake” often comes from confusion with diamond simulants like cubic zirconia (CZ) and moissanite. While simulants may look like diamonds, they have completely different chemical compositions and properties.

Lab-grown diamonds are not substitutes or lookalikes, they are diamonds in every sense, just created in a controlled environment instead of deep underground.

Are lab-grown diamonds “synthetic” diamonds?

Yes, but not in the way many people think.

In gemology, the term synthetic diamond refers to a real diamond that has been grown in a lab rather than mined. It has the same atomic structure, physical properties, and durability as a natural diamond. However, outside of the scientific community, “synthetic” is often misunderstood to mean “fake” or “imitation.” This is incorrect, unlike cubic zirconia or moissanite (which are diamond simulants), a lab-grown diamond is a real diamond in every sense.

What is the difference between natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds?

The primary difference between natural (or mined) diamonds and lab-grown (or lab-cultivated) diamonds lies in their creation process. Natural diamonds form over billions of years beneath the Earth’s surface under extreme pressure and heat. Lab-grown diamonds, by contrast, are produced in just weeks or months using advanced technology in controlled environments that mimic these natural conditions. Despite their different origins, both types exhibit identical physical, chemical, and optical properties, making them virtually indistinguishable, even to experts, without specialized equipment.

How can I tell whether a diamond is natural or lab-grown?

Natural and lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical, meaning you can’t tell the difference with the naked eye. Only specialized, expensive equipment in a gemological lab can determine the origin of a diamond.

Do lab-grown diamonds last as long as natural diamonds?

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are just as durable as natural diamonds, with a Mohs hardness of 10, the highest level of hardness found in nature. This means they are highly scratch-resistant, retain their brilliance forever, and will last a lifetime.

Are lab-grown diamonds a good investment?

Lab-grown diamonds are an investment in beauty, ethical sourcing, and personal meaning rather than financial resale value.

Historically, most jewelry (even mined diamonds) does not appreciate in resale value unless it is exceptionally rare or has historical significance. The true value of a diamond, whether lab-grown or mined, lies in its emotional significance, timeless beauty, and ability to mark life’s most cherished moments.

Are DIA'LOG lab-grown diamonds certified?

For each stone weighing 1ct and above, a certificate from IGI or GIA will be provided, with a minimum of F+ color, VS1+ clarity, and excellent cut on the certificate. Our selection process includes careful examination of numerous stone certificates against our own strict standards, even beyond the 4Cs.
