Ring Anatomy & Design Considerations

An engagement ring is more than jewelry, it’s a symbol of love, commitment, and individuality. Designing yours means selecting each detail with intention, from the center stone to the final finish. The following are the key components of an engagement ring design, each of which can be tailored to reflect your personal style and story.

Center Stone

The center stone is the focal point of most engagement rings and has the greatest influence on its appearance and value.

Gemstone Options

White diamonds remain the most classic choice, but diamonds in rare fancy colors are also available. Many couples also choose vibrant gemstones such as blue sapphires, green emeralds, or red rubies. Other gemstones can be sourced upon request.

Natural or Lab-Grown

All gemstones are available in both natural and lab-grown varieties, depending on your preference.

Shapes

Each shape carries its own character and style:

  • Round

  • Oval

  • Cushion (square or rectangular)

  • Emerald (rectangular)

  • Asscher (square)

  • Radiant (square or rectangular)

  • Pear

  • Heart

  • Marquise

  • Princess (square)

The 4Cs

Diamonds are evaluated by the 4Cs: cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. These qualities together define the stone’s beauty, quality, and value.

Side Stones

Side stones are larger accent stones placed on either side of the center stone, often in symmetrical arrangements. They can match or contrast with the center stone, offering either a harmonious or distinctive look. Common styles include three-stone rings and designs featuring tapered baguettes.

Accent Stones

Accent stones are smaller diamonds or gemstones that decorate the band, gallery, or surround the center stone (as in halo designs). Unlike side stones, they are meant to enhance the design subtly without drawing focus away from the center.

Head

Also called the crown or basket, the head holds the center stone securely in place. Its design affects how the stone is displayed, how much light reaches it, and how the ring sits on the finger.

  • Popular styles include basket, prong, bezel, trellis, cathedral, tulip, and V-tip.

  • A high-set head can make the stone appear larger but may catch on clothing.

  • A low-set head offers a subtle profile and added protection.

Prongs

Prongs are the fine metal arms that grip the center stone. They are small but essential, balancing security with visibility.

  • Prong counts: 4, 6, 8, and double-prongs
  • Prong styles: Claw, tab, round, and V-prong

Gallery

The gallery is the decorative space beneath the center stone, visible from the side of the ring. It connects the head to the shank, adds structural support, and allows more light to reach the stone. A carefully designed gallery can add elegance and detail to the ring’s profile.

Bridge

Located beneath the head, the bridge connects the setting to the shank and rests against the finger. It helps the ring sit upright and provides strength, ensuring the stone stays centered.

Shoulders

The shoulders are the upper parts of the shank where it meets the head. They are a key area for customization, often shaped into tapered, twisted, or split designs, and may also be set with accent stones

Shank

The shank, or band, is the portion that wraps around the finger. It is the ring’s foundation, influencing both comfort and style.

  • Widths typically range from 1.5mm to 3mm.

  • Wider shanks provide more support and presence.

  • Slimmer shanks create a delicate, lightweight feel.

Setting

The setting refers to the overall design that holds the center stone. It defines both the ring’s look and the level of protection for the stone.

Common setting styles include:

  • Solitaire: a single stone on a plain band

  • Band with accent stones: pavé or channel-set for added sparkle

  • Trilogy (three-stone): symbolizing past, present, and future

  • Halo: a circle of smaller stones around the center stone for extra brilliance

  • Hidden halo: a row of stones beneath the center stone, visible from the side

  • Bezel: the stone is fully surrounded by metal for security

  • Cathedral: elegant arches lifting the stone above the band
